Thursday Doors: The Holy Door

I was visiting friends and family in Quebec City last weekend. While walking through the old city with my friend and her son who was acting as our tour guide, he suggested we have a look at the Holy Door on the north side of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Quebec. “A door!” I said excitedly. So I explained to them the Norm’s 2.0 Thursday Doors challenge.

Well you don’t have to be an observant Christian to appreciate the beauty of this door made of massive bronze. It was gifted by the Vatican to  the Cathedral-Basilica Notre-Dame de Quebec  in 2013 to coincide with celebrations of the church’s 350th anniversary. The Basilica is the  oldest church in North America. This Holy Door is the only one that exist outside of Europe.

You can read more about it here and here.

235/365 – Not just any door

Take a look again at my Tuesday blog feature’s photo.

Mary, Queen of the world/Take II

Here I am in the cupola of Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral. If you look way up you will see another opening with a balcony and windows, that is the top of the cupola or the ultimate cupola.

Today’s feature photo, is the door that leads to the tiny cupola at the very top of the cathedral.

To get there, I had to climb very old wooden staircases that often felt unsafe and treacherous.  There were also some very long, old, wooden ladders, standing totally straight up; not an easy climb, especially while dragging alone a heavy camera and a tripod. Only three of us went up there, the rest of the group decided not to risk it.

I have to admit, I was scared but I was also so determined to get a photo of that door at the top that I would feature in Norm’s Thursday Doors. I was the first one to get up there and had plenty of time alone to capture that door. So here you have it, I must say, I was not disappointed, what a crazy sight! The heat felt while climbing there was surreal, the photography instructor name it “Hell’s Door” for that reason.

232/365 – Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral

I am attending a photography workshop every day this week. Our first day was spent at Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral. Expect to see diverse photos throughout the week as many styles of photography will be covered. I am starting the week with an iPhone shot. We have to leave our memory card with the instructor at the end of each day, so I made sure to shot a few images with my iPhone to have something to show today. Starting tomorrow, I will share with you photos taken with my Canon.
